Fast Five on Friday
(Five Items)

SB 97 Update – The number of districts that have adopted a policy raising the compulsory school age to 18 keeps rising and I so appreciate the tremendous response by superintendents and boards on this initiative.  It shows a commitment to not giving up on these students and ensuring all students have the opportunity to be college- and career-ready.

Currently, we stand at 107 school districts that have passed such a policy and submitted all of the required documentation into ASSIST.  Attached is a map that depicts those districts.

We will continue to keep you updated on the districts that have addressed SB 97 requirements.

Save the Date for a SB 97 Celebration at the Capitol – The superintendents and board chairs of those districts passing a policy raising the compulsory school age to 18 and submitting all required documentation into ASSIST will be receiving an invitation from Governor Beshear, First Lady Jane Beshear and myself to attend a recognition event on the afternoon of August 8 at the Capitol rotunda in Frankfort.  This includes all districts that have completed these steps between now and August 8.

The event will start at 1:15 p.m. ET and include a group picture, recognition of districts/press conference and a reception in honor of the school districts.  If your district has already taken this action or plans to do so between now and August 8, please put August 8 on your calendar, and I hope you and your board chair will travel to Frankfort for the recognition that you deserve for doing the right thing for the students of our state.

More details will follow when the actual invitation goes out.

Reminder of Sept. 5 Superintendents’ Summit – This week, I sent all superintendents an invitation to the September 5 Superintendents’ Summit this.  The invitation is attached.  Please make sure you register your attendance by e-mailing Thelma Whiteside at Thelma.Whiteside@education.ky.gov or calling her at (502) 564 – 2106 by Aug. 19.

Next Superintendents’ Webcast on July 25, 2013 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. ET – The next superintendents’ webcast will be held on Thursday, July 25 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. ET.  Topics will include celebration of meeting the 55% target required in SB 97 and next steps, a summary of regulations that go into effect in the coming school year, an update on the accountability timeline, an update on the superintendent evaluation work and information on the PGES pilot web collector.
