With the granting of flexibility under the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act/No Child Left Behind (ESEA/NCLB), Kentucky’s public school system will have one comprehensive system of accountability for both state and federal purposes to ensure college/career readiness for all students.  See news release for more information.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 Promising Practices in Character Education Program, sponsored by the Character Education Partnership (CEP). CEP looks for a wide variety of practices that successfully promote character education among youth, and the group recognizes them annually as Promising Practices.  Access the application here, and the deadline to apply is March 1.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching recognize outstanding K-12 teachers for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession. The 2012 awards honor math and science teachers working in grades K-6. Nominations may be submitted at http://www.paemst.org. The deadline for nominations is April 1, and applications must be completed by May 1.

Homeless Education Program RFA posted
As authorized under Title X, Part C of the No Child Left Behind Act, the Office of Next-Generation Schools and Districts is issuing a Request for Application (RFA) from local educational agencies to develop and implement programs that facilitate the enrollment, attendance and success in school of homeless children and youth. The application deadline is Friday, March 2, 2012, at 4 p.m. (ET). The 2012 Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Education Program RFA and Call for Reviewers can be found here.

Real World Design Challenge
The Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) is an annual competition that provides high school students the opportunity to work on real-world engineering challenges in a team environment. Student teams are asked to address a challenge that confronts our nation's leading industries, use professional engineering software to develop their solutions and generate presentations that convincingly demonstrate the value of their solutions. Ten Kentucky teams will compete this year, and the state-level winners will be announced during the week of Feb. 20, 2012. The RWDC National Challenge Event is set for Apr. 20-23, 2012.
