Commercial Driver License Program

Last Updated on Wednesday, February 06, 2008 at 5:03 AM

This program began in 1990 to assist local school districts in obtaining Commercial Driver Licenses (CDL) for their driver applicants.  Currently there are over thirty commercial driver license school bus examiners statewide.  All school districts are assigned a regional examiner.  This allows the school districts the flexibility of scheduling a test with a school bus person as opposed to the Kentucky State Police.  This generally speeds the process of obtaining a commercial driver license.  All school bus examiners are selected in a joint process between the Kentucky Department of Education and the Kentucky State Police.  A requirement for becoming a school bus examiner is all applicants must be a state certified driver training instructor. Nominations ands selections are made by the two state agencies only. For additional information about this program contact Pupil Transportation in the Kentucky Department of Education.

Many (but not all) of the Transportation Cabinet's forms may be accessed on-line. To do so, you must first download and install a piece of software to your computer before a form will open properly. The software is free and we'll help you download it.

Kentucky Division of Driver Licensing

New federal standards for testing and licensing heavy truck and bus operators are now law in Kentucky. These minimum standards will guarantee the fitness of commercial motor vehicle operators by requiring demonstrated ability to drive heavy vehicles before a license is issued. A new license, called the Commercial Driver License (CDL), has replaced what was known as a chauffeur license for many Kentucky drivers.
