(FRANKFORT, Ky.) -- Kentucky high school students can earn college credit while in high school through a partnership between the Kentucky Virtual High School (KVHS) and the Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC).
By registering with Discover College Online at KVHS, students can earn Kentucky Community and Technical System (KCTCS) credit in addition to their high school credit for the same course. The resulting KCTCS credit may be applied toward coursework at any of Kentucky's state universities or colleges.
Students who complete dual credit courses offered through the KVHS and earn a grade of C or better will earn KCTCS credit. Among the 15 courses eligible for dual credit in 2003-04 are several Advanced Placement courses.
Traditionally, high school students earn college credit by taking Advanced Placement courses and scoring at the qualifying level on national examinations. This new dual credit agreement provides multiple options for students, enabling them to earn credits by completing the national examination or by earning a C in the KVHS course after registering through Discover College Online. KVHS course fees will apply; no college tuition fee will be charged.
OCTC and the KVHS will expand this partnership to additional courses in the future, including dual credit courses in the fields of Information Technology and Health Services. The purpose of this partnership is to expand learning options available to Kentucky's high school students and to promote their successful transition to college.
