(FRANKFORT, Ky.) -- Nearly 156 individuals from across the state will serve on Scholastic Audit Teams during the 2004-05 school year, the Kentucky Department of Education announced today.
The group includes 49 Highly Skilled Educators and 98 active or retired teachers, building- and district-level administrators, higher education representatives and parents. Nine alternate members also were selected.
KRS 158.6455 mandates that the Department of Education conduct audits of schools that are categorized as in need of assistance under the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System (CATS). School performance judgments were announced in mid-October, with 48 schools classified as in need of assistance.
The audit is a comprehensive review of a school's learning environment, organizational efficiency and student academic performance. Results of the audits will be used to determine the level of support necessary to improve student academic performance.
"The Scholastic Audit helps schools to focus on the specific needs of students," said Pat Hurt, director of the department's Division of School Improvement. "The Scholastic Audit teams will guide schools in determining what they need to do to reach the goal of proficiency in 2014. The Standards and Indicators for School Improvement (SISI), a tool used by the teams, is available to any school, regardless of its level of performance, via the Web. All schools are urged to use the SISI as a framework for planning whole school improvement and for gauging implementation and impact of their school improvement efforts."
KRS 158.6455 also requires assessment of a random sample (not to exceed five percent) of schools that are currently meeting or exceeding their goals. The Standards and Indicators for School Improvement also will be used for that purpose.
The scholastic audit teams' responsibilities include:
- making recommendations for assistance to schools
- submitting a comprehensive report that will include specific recommendations to improve teaching and learning; assessment of the effectiveness of school-based decision making decisions; identification of assistance and resources needed for improvement and recommendations for prioritization of next steps including specific strategies
The team members and alternates have participated in training provided by the department. Teams will spend approximately five days on-site in a minimum of three schools and prepare a report of findings for each school. Each team member receives a daily stipend of $150 during training and $350 during the audit process.
