(FRANKFORT, Ky.) -- Four career and technical education teachers received national recognition during the annual convention of the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) December 9-11 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Marilyn Bailey, a family and consumer sciences teacher at Barren County High, received the Award of Merit from the National Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (NATFCS). She was recognized for her contributions as an outstanding teacher and her commitment to high-quality instruction. Bailey has implemented a program organized around career majors and national standards for family and consumer sciences.
Lynn Baldwin, a Pathways to Careers teacher at Conner High in Boone County, was recognized by the National Association of Vocational Special Needs Personnel as the Outstanding Vocational Special Needs Teacher. Her belief that every child has the right to learn the same information as others, but that not all students learn the same way, drives her work to involve students in job shadowing, internships, entrepreneurial activities and cooperative education.
Tony Jury, an agriculture teacher at Gallatin County High, was recognized as the Direct Vocational Special Needs Support Person of the Year. As a National Board Certified teacher, Jury demonstrates respect for the abilities of all students and strives for ways to involve them. He serves as FFA advisor, co-collaborator on a biotechnology integration project, grant writer and consultant to the special education team in his school.
Leslie Watkins, a family and consumer sciences teacher at Reidland High in McCracken County, was elected president-elect of the NATFCS. A National Board Certified teacher, she has held offices in numerous professional associations at the regional and state levels. Watkins is past president of the Kentucky Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences. Her school program focuses on child development and culinary arts and includes an active chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).
Founded in 1926, the Association for Career and Technical Education is the largest national education association dedicated to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults for careers. Its membership includes more than 30,000 career and technical educators, administrators, researchers, guidance counselors and others involved in planning and conducting career and technical education programs at the secondary, postsecondary and adult levels. The association is headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia.
