DAY SELECTED AS KY SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF PRINCIPAL

            (FRANKFORT, Ky.) -- Jacqueline Day, a former teacher at the Kentucky School for the Deaf (KSD) in Danville, has been selected principal of the school.

            Day, a resident of Danville, is the parent of a deaf child and has almost 20 years of teaching experience in deaf education, most of it at the elementary, middle and secondary levels at KSD. She holds a master's degree in deaf education and a Rank I in school administration.

            "Ms. Day brings an extensive and unique array of experiences and perspectives to this most important leadership position," said Johnnie Grissom, associate commissioner of the Department of Education's Office of Special Instructional Services. " She is well immersed in Kentucky's Program of Studies and is a respected leader in the development and delivery of instructional strategies that convey high expectations for students who are deaf and hard of hearing statewide and at KSD."

            Day begins her new duties immediately. Bill Melton has served as interim principal at KSD since the departure of Principal Fran Hardin, who became the school's director of outreach in September 2004.The director of outreach is responsible for expanding the role of KSD as a statewide resource for deaf and hard of hearing students. Melton will return to his duties as KSD campus manager.

            Serving students from elementary through high school, the Kentucky School for the Deaf is located in historic Danville. Established in 1823, KSD was the fourth school for the deaf and the first state-supported school of its kind in the nation.
