(FRANKFORT, Ky.) -- Kentucky now has the distinction of chartering the first-ever virtual chapter of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, or Spanish Honor Society.
The chapter is chartered through the Kentucky Virtual High School (KVHS). Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica is a national organization whose mission is to recognize outstanding high school students who are studying Spanish. It is affiliated with the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
KVHS will hold an induction ceremony for charter members on Thursday, May 5, at 5 p.m. EDT. The ceremony will occur onsite on the 19th floor of the Capital Plaza Tower in Frankfort and in a virtual environment. Brandon Cox of Frankfort High School and Emily Fortney of Lafayette High School in Fayette County, two KVHS AP Spanish students who have already been inducted into honor society chapters at their schools, will conduct the ceremony. Cox and Fortney will appear on streaming video, and the new inductees will be heard through the collaboration software session as they repeat their vows from their home or school computers.
The guest speaker will be Manuel Sanchez, Spanish education consultant from the Embassy of Spain, who will be present in Frankfort. The ceremony will close with comments from Judy Park and Ursula Sihocky, national directors of the Spanish Honor Society, from their offices in Chicago. A reception on the 19th floor will follow.
New Inductees to the honor society are:
- Margaret Clouse, Glasgow High School
- Rafael Kennedy, Madison Southern High School (Madison County)
- Nick Mader, Covington Catholic High School
- Matthew Riddle, Rose Hill Christian High School (Boyd County)
- Ashley Thweatt, Marshall County High School
