News Release 05-029 -- May 16, 2005

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) -- The Kentucky Department of Education is seeking public comment on its application for funding through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA).

Each year, states must apply to the U.S. Department of Education for federal funding under Part B of IDEA, which offers grants to assist states in providing special education and related services to children with disabilities. The federal General Education Provisions Act (GEPA) requires that each state publish its proposed plan to implement IDEA provisions so that the public may comment on it.

Kentucky's application is available on the Kentucky Department of Education's Web site. To access the application, follow these steps:

- Type "state IDEA application" into the search box at the top right of the page and click on "Search."

- Under the heading "1. Student and Family Support," click on the first link -- "Kentucky's State Application under …"

- Follow the instructions to submit comments on the application.

In Kentucky, approximately 106,000 public school students with special needs receive services through federal, state and local funding sources. The state's application for funding under Part B of IDEA outlines how Kentucky will manage and administer grant funds to local school districts.
