News Advisory 05-044 -- August 12, 2005

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) -- The Kentucky Department of Education will host a Supplemental Services Vendor/Provider/Applicant Conference on Tuesday, August 23.

The conference is set to begin at 1 p.m. EDT and last until 3 p.m. EDT. It will be held in the State Board Room on the first floor of the Capital Plaza Tower in Frankfort. There is no cost to participants.

The event will provide opportunities for present and potential supplemental services providers to get feedback on questions regarding the new supplemental services application, guidelines and other aspects of the program.

Under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, schools that do not make adequate yearly progress toward academic and other goals may be required to offer supplemental services to students in their schools. As defined by the U.S. Department of Education, the services should provide tutoring or extra help to students in reading, English/language arts and mathematics. The extra help can be provided before or after school, on weekends or in the summer. NCLB requires that the services be of high quality, research-based and specifically designed to increase the academic achievement of children.

States are responsible for identifying eligible supplemental service providers. Parents choose the provider for their children from among the those approved by the state for their school district.

Current and potential supplemental providers who are interested in attending the conference are encouraged to RSVP to Monica Davis, 8th Floor, 500 Mero St., Frankfort KY 40601.
