(FRANKFORT, Ky.) -- A Kentucky educator will get the surprise of a lifetime this week, when he or she will be notified of his or her selection as a Milken Family Foundation Educator.

On Thursday, November 3, the educator will be visited by Education Commissioner Gene Wilhoit, Education Secretary Virginia Fox and a representative of the Milken Family Foundation. The educator is employed by Atherton High School in Jefferson County.

Commissioner Wilhoit, Secretary Fox and other visitors will arrive at Atherton High at 9 a.m.

CONFIDENTIALITY IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT IN THIS VISIT. The winner does not know of his or her selection.

The largest teacher recognition program in the U.S., the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards were created to reward, retain and attract the highest quality K-12 educators to the profession. Each Milken Educator receives an unrestricted financial award of $25,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the annual Milken National Education Conference in May 2006.

Since 1993, when the state joined the program, 46 Kentucky educators have received the award.
