News Release 06-009 -- February 23, 2006

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) -- New information about the selection of school principals is now available for Kentucky's school council members.

KRS 160.345 (the school-based decision making statute) gives councils the responsibility of hiring their schools' principals and outlines the requirements for hiring. When a school principal vacancy occurs, the school council is to receive training in recruitment and interviewing techniques prior to carrying out the process of selecting a new principal.

The Kentucky Department of Education and the Kentucky Association of School Councils (KASC) have collaborated to provide additional resources for council members:
- KASC has recommendations for principal selection training and a list of trainers who specialize in this area. More information on the training is available from the KASC Web site at http://www.kasc.net.
- The Department of Education has produced a technical document to help guide trainers and school councils. Visit the department's main Web page at http://www.education.ky.gov. Type #SBDM into the search box, then choose the SBDM Technical Assistance link, then select View or Download Documents, then select Guidebook for Principal Selection.
