STLP STATE SHOWCASE COMPETITION WINNERS

News Release 06-024 -- May 19, 2006

      (FRANKFORT, Ky.) – Three Kentucky schools were winners and four were named runners-up in the Technology Showcase portion of the State STLP Competition, held at the Lexington Convention Center May 11-12, 2006.

Apollo High (Daviess Co.)                            First Place, High School Division

Carr Creek Elementary (Knott Co.)               First Place, Middle School Division

Mt. Sterling Elementary (Montgomery Co.)    First Place, Elementary School Division

Crittenden County High                               Runner Up

Lebanon Middle (Marion Co.)                       Runner Up

Magoffin County High                                  Runner Up

Prater Borders Elementary (Magoffin Co.)    Runner Up

 

      A total of 234 schools from 83 school districts participated in the competition. More than 2,300 students, teachers, judges and support persons gathered to witness what students know and can do with technology.

Student presentations were viewed on-site and at remote locations through video conferencing provided by Nortel, Alltel and AT&T. The event included competitions and winners in the following areas:

- projects that impacted the school or community

- presenters

- cyber reporting and videographers

- digital products created by students in art, music, video and writing

- hardware bench challenge

- technology quick recall

- gaming

 

          The University of Louisville sponsored a Web design competition and the University of Kentucky sponsored a

 

programming competition. Morehead State University assisted with Web design projects.

 

            The competition also included a Technology Playground, where students, parents and teachers explored

 

learning exhibits from ThinkQuest, the National Guard, the University of Kentucky's Engineering and Ag Science

 

program, robotics and more.
