News Release 06-035 -- June 26, 2006

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) – One hundred Kentucky schools will receive funding in the 2006-07 school year from the Read to Achieve grant program to help improve their students' reading achievement.

The Read to Achieve Act of 2005 was supported by Gov. Ernie Fletcher and passed by the Kentucky legislature to provide reading diagnostic and intervention services to struggling readers in the primary program. Read to Achieve programs offer one-on-one or small group instruction for identified students, highly-trained intervention teachers and continuous assessment of individual student needs.

This is the third round of grant awards since the program was established. Each new participating school in

this round will receive $70,000 in start-up funding to implement research-based reading programs that are proven to

be reliable and replicable. The grant provides a second year of continuation funding at a reduced rate. The grant

may be renewed following the second year of successful implementation.
