The 11-member Kentucky Board of Education develops and adopts the regulations that govern Kentucky's 175 public school districts and the actions of the Kentucky Department of Education. The board also is responsible for appointing the Kentucky Commissioner of Education.
In September, Gene Wilhoit, Kentucky's third commissioner of education, announced his resignation effective November 3. In early October, the board agreed to issue a Request for Proposals for a search firm to secure candidates for the position. Board members Rev. C.B. Akins, Bonnie Freeman, Judy Gibbons, Keith Travis and David Webb will serve on the board's Search Committee, with Jeanne Ferguson as an alternate.
A decision on selection of a search firm may occur at the board's November meeting. The board also outlined a proposed timeline for the search, with the possibility of top candidates being named in March 2007.
