Nutrition Intermediate Grade Levels

Overview:  You will examine how to prevent cardiovascular disease through good nutritional habits.  The food guide pyramid and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutritional guidelines will be explored.  You will use this new information to plan nutritious meals and snacks.

2.31 Students demonstrate the knowledge and skills they need to remain physically healthy and to accept responsibility for their own physical well-being.

 

Essential Content:

 

Impact of diet, exercise, and rest on keeping major body organs (e.g., heart, lungs, brain, stomach, skin) healthy Role of nutritious food on the growth of healthy bodies

Food guide pyramid to determine appropriate servings and plan simple menus

Nutritious snack choices

Essential Questions:

 

What foods should I eat to help prevent cardiovascular disease?

What factors influence my food choices?

How do I develop a healthy meal plan? Culminating Project

 

Your class will be divided into groups to create a balanced meal plan for one day (including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks if necessary) with appropriate serving sizes for a person from a specified population (e.g., children, the elderly, people from a specific culture). You should consider the factors that influence food choices, food choices that help prevent cardiovascular disease, and the techniques used to develop healthy meals. Your work may be displayed in many different formats (e.g., PowerPoint, video) and targeted to many different audiences (e.g., senior citizen organizations).
