Kentucky Teacher Network for Excellence in Civic Education and Engagement Professional Development Opportunity

 

What is the purpose of the professional development?

·       Design a standards-based unit of study on Federalism

·       Engage students with government and civics content

·       Apply concepts of Federalism to the State of Kentucky

·       Involve students with local and state service learning opportunities

 

Who should participate?

Kentucky public high school social studies/civic educators

 

When and where?

·       Three, two-day face to face meetings (Friday evening [5-9 pm EST]/Saturday morning and afternoon [8:30-3:30 EST]*) Fall 2007-Spring 2008 at the University of Louisville (Oct. 12 and 13, Nov. 2 and 3, Dec. 7 and 8)

·       January 2008 follow up meeting at the University of Louisville (TBA)

·       Facilitated online professional learning community accessible and used Fall 2007-June 2008

*Contact Tim Holman if interested but Friday/Saturday meeting times are a conflict for personal/professional reasons

 

What opportunities will I have if I participate?

·       Enhance my content knowledge in the areas of government, democracy, history, and law.

·       Enhance my knowledge and understanding of government and civics standards including national standards and the revised Kentucky Program of Studies and Core Content for Assessment version 4.1.

·       Understand the process of curriculum mapping and design curriculum maps for a government and civics course and/or social studies course(s).

·       Gain an understanding of and design assessments Of (summative) and For (formative) learning.

·       Design standards-based units of study aligned with Wiggins and McTighe’s, Understanding by Design.

·       Integrate Tomlinson’s, Differentiated Instruction, within standards-based units of study.

·       Enhance my knowledge and use of technology and student use of technology with government and civics content.   

·       Develop opportunities for students to discuss local, national, and international current events and issues and connect those discussions to broader concepts of government and civics.

·       Develop opportunities for students to apply course content to local and state community/service learning opportunities and connect with their Individual Learning Plan.

 

How much does the training cost?

The training is FREE (We pay you!)

 

Participants will receive:

·       a $1000 stipend for attending ALL trainings and submitting standards-based units of study design tasks

·       valuable job-embedded professional development experience that will provide resources and materials aligned with the training content

·       opportunity to engage with educators in a professional learning community

·       meals, lodging* , and mileage** reimbursement or expenses will be paid for by the University of Louisville. (*The University of Louisville will make all hotel reservations for interested participants, **participants will receive $.49 per mile traveled, to and from training)

·       Option to receive graduate credit from the University of Louisville.

·       Teachers who are interested in receiving graduate level credit will be required to follow the University of Louisville’s graduate school admission requirements.

·       Teachers are responsible for paying tuition and related expenses related to the credit hours.

·       Eligible teachers who received a waiver for course credit from supervising KTIP interns may apply the waiver to this work.

·       Please complete the attached application form to participate.  Selected applicants will be asked to be a part of a research study.
