KDE Striving Readers Grant 2009-2012
KENTUCKY RECEIVES STRIVING READERS FUNDING
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) – Kentucky, along with seven other states, will share in $6.6 million in Striving Readers grants to help improve the literacy skills of struggling adolescent readers.
The Striving Readers program is a multi-year, $17 million initiative administered by the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of the program is to raise reading achievement in Title I-eligible middle and high schools where significant numbers of students are faced with the challenges of poverty and reading below grade level.
For fiscal year 2010, Kentucky will receive $645,359 in funding for the program. The other states and their grant amounts are: Illinois ($727,359); Louisiana ($1,002,022); Michigan ($945,052); New York ($782,461); Virginia ($594,891); Washington ($628,952); and Wisconsin ($1,286,966)
The programs funded by the Striving Readers grants include a range of research-based adolescent literacy projects serving diverse populations. Each program includes a rigorous evaluation conducted by independent researchers.
Grantees may use the Striving Readers funds for interventions for middle and high school-aged students to improve basic reading skills, motivation, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension using research-based programs; for professional development aligned with scientifically based reading research; for valid and reliable reading assessments; and for the design and implementation of a rigorous evaluation.
The Kentucky Cognitive Literacy Model (KCLM),a partnership of the Kentucky Department of Education, the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development and nine high schools, will receive funds from this year’s grant allocation. KCLM provides a supplemental literacy intervention for struggling readers through a year-long course that focuses on motivation and engagement, strategic processing, instructional strategies for content learning and communication skills. The nine Kentucky high schools participating in the KCLM project are:

Even Start - Kentucky Even Start Programs provide intensive family literacy services that integrate learning activities for parents and children, helping parents to become active partners in their children's education, and children to achieve a high level of success in school and life. Even Start offers educational opportunities to families most in need, as defined by levels of literacy, income, poverty, English as a Second Language and other related factors.
Primary
Kentucky's Reading First Grants- Reading First is a major federal initiative within the new reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act: No Child Left Behind to improve reading for primary age (K-3) children throughout the state. The United States Department of Education will send Kentucky 13.7 million dollars annually for the next six years. Kentucky will continue to build upon its commitment to improving literacy and ensuring that all children leave the primary program reading on grade level.

The Adolescent Literacy Coaching Project (ALCP)
The Adolescent Literacy Coaching Project (ALCP) is a professional development initiative working with teachers in grades 4-12. Working is collaboration with The Collaborative Center for Literacy Development, Kentucky Department of Education and Kentucky’s eight public universities; our mandate is to train literacy coaches to work directly with teachers in the classroom. This job embedded model of rigorous, relevant professional development has a direct and substantial impact on student achievement across all content areas. Coaching is synonymous with relationships and the resulting empowerment of teachers creates a powerful environment rich in literacy.
Striving Readers
The Kentucky Content Literacy Consortium (KCLC) is part of a federal grant from the U.S Department of Education to improve literacy instruction and performance for middle and high school students. The Consortium consists of seven school districts involving 23 middle and high schools and partnerships with the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, the Collaborative for Teaching and Learning, and the Kentucky Department of Education. The grant will provide teacher training at both the middle and high school levels to integrate content literacy instruction, implement interventions for struggling students and provide a reading coach for middle and high school staffs.
NASBE Adolescent Literacy Grant award
The Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) will receive a one-year, $15,000 planning grant to help state efforts to incorporate literacy strategies into core academic subjects, the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) announced today.
The KBE joined state boards of education in Connecticut, New Hampshire, Utah and West Virginia as grant recipients. The funding comes from NASBE’s Adolescent Literacy Network and is supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. More
