On September 20, 2011 Kentucky was announced as a Lead State Partner in the development of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) with Achieve, Inc. As a Lead State Partner, Kentucky educators will have a great degree of input on shaping the standards along with 25 other lead states. On this page you will find information regarding Kentucky's work with the NGSS and updates on the progress of Kentucky's science standards.

The NGSS were approved to be Kentucky Core Academic Standards for Science (Science KCAS) by the Kentucky Board of Education at their June 5, 2013 meeting. The science standards have completed the legislative review process and are now incorporated into the Kentucky Core Academic Standards for implementation in the classroom.

The version of the NGSS approved by the Board on June 5 assigns the middle school performance expectations to individual grades using Achieve's revised conceptual progressions model for middle school. Download the Science KCAS that includes middle grade designations.

The NGSS were based on the Framework for K-12 Science Education published by the National Academies Press and available to download or read online for free.

A brief outlining the Framework is also available to download.

The standards themselves, along with several supporting documents are available from
