How Does My Community Compare?

What gets measured gets done.  And Kentucky has demonstrated its commitment to measuring results in education.  But how do we use those measures to mobilize our community.  We encourage you to do three things related to available data:
 
  • Study the data – know what data is available and learn how your district compares to others in the state.
  • Share the data – Use and interpret the data for your School Board and your community.  Data can be your call to action.  Use it to tell your story and inform your plans for the future. Identify data to be used as evidence of progress/success.
  • Hold yourself and partners accountable to future results.


Some data that is readily available to you includes:


K-Screen Data
In 2012, Kentucky began screening five year olds for kindergarten readiness based on the Kentucky School Readiness Definition.  In 2013, all 173 districts participated and more than 50,000 kindergarteners were screened.  In 2014, only about half of kids arrived at kindergarten ready to be successful.  You can access your district’s K-screen here.  In addition, as the data source, you have access to data about the prior early care and education experiences of children coming to your school.  Use that information as a bridge builder with potential community partners.  Celebrate those whose children screen well at kindergarten entry.  Use it to open a dialogue with those whose children may need extra assistance.  (See the “Guidance to Superintendents” in the Quick Link Box for appropriate use of prior settings data).
 
Early Childhood Profiles
The Early Childhood Profiles are designed to provide each county in Kentucky with data that will assist them in developing local strategies to assure that every child in their community arrives at kindergarten ready to grow, ready to learn and ready to succeed. The profiles contain results from the kindergarten screener and information about participation in publicly funded preschool, head start and child care.  Demographic data is provided representing key indicators of possible barriers to success for young children and their families and participation in public health and social service programs that can help.
 
School and District Report Card
The School and District Report Card provides information about each school and district, including test performance, teacher qualifications, student safety and parent involvement. It also includes an assessment and accountability profile.

This data together can help District leaders gain a full understanding about how well the system is serving children, and can inform your decision making for students before they get to school.
