It is important to have a cross-system group of district leaders, early childhood professionals and families working together as a community to align with the larger vision of kindergarten readiness. Superintendents are uniquely positioned to lead school districts as the back bone organization in to mobilize communities around Kindergarten Readiness.
Collective Impact Model
We know that community level changes require a special set of skills. The Collective Impact model tells us that there of 5 characteristics of successful community change models (translated into this work):
- a common goal (more children arriving at Kindergarten ready),
- agreed upon common strategies
- common measurement (Brigance),
- strong communication among all community partners, and
- the identification of a Backbone Organization
Working with Stakeholders
As leader of a school district, the Superintendent needs to be a key figure in a community’s strategy to improve school readiness. However, school districts large and small are faced with any number of challenges that constantly demand the attention of a Superintendent and their staff. Fortunately, the issue of kindergarten readiness is a community issue that has momentum with a number of community partners. As you begin to think about strategies for working with stakeholders in your community, begin with the following steps:
- Assess your community’s kindergarten readiness using the Early Childhood Profile, District Brigance Results and an environmental scan of internal and community assets.
- Identify and convene local partners
- Establish aligned goals, strategies, and measures for continuous improvement
- Monitor Progress
- Communicate Results
