Evidence-Based Practices/Exemplary Programs that Address Truancy:

Truancy Intervention:  Alternative Schooling

Alternative education programs are designed to meet the needs of students whose opportunities for success would be increased in a non-traditional setting.  Students are referred to alternative programs for academic and non-academic reasons, with enhanced access to counseling and treatment services, and career and technical programs.  Descriptors for this intervention include:
  • Various learning options for students (performance-based, teacher-led instruction, virtual curriculum, credit recovery, dual credit, Advanced Placement courses, web-based curriculum, access to local area technology centers)
  • Students with IEPs receive educational services modified to meet their needs
  • Access to the full curriculum (arts & humanities, physical education, practical living, etc.)
  • Resources and adequate funding (print materials/textbooks, access to Internet and/or other technology, instructional resources may be different but equal to those in A1 school)
  • Program encourages parental involvement

Truancy Intervention:  Credit Recovery and Virtual Learning

Online learning allows students to work at their own pace , slower or faster according to their needs, to go further into the mastery of content that is of particular academic and career interest and to study with students from other regions and backgrounds.   Credit Recovery needs to be an authentic learning situation through which academic process is measured and assessed.  Descriptors for this indicator are:
  • Online options for credit recovery
  • Increased instructional support for at-risk students
  • Flexible scheduling and delivery format
  • Online facilitation and support from qualified teachers
