Student Voice Survey

The Student Voice Survey is a classroom-level analysis and reporting system.  Student Voice surveys are being used by hundreds of schools and thousands of classrooms in more than 25 states nationwide. The survey generates information both about how students experience teaching practices and learning conditions in the classroom as well as information about how students assess their own engagement.

The Student Voice Survey is an on-line survey;during the survey,  students grades 3 thru 12 are asked to give feedback on specific aspects of the classroom experience.  These questions are aligned to The Charlotte Danielson Framework for Teaching, which has been adapted for the Kentucky Department of Education. Read more about student surveys from Sarah Brown Wessling, a National Teacher of the Year, in a Q and A titled "They Are the Experts".

This March, ALL teachers in the PGES  field test participated in the Student Voice Survey.   ALL teachers in field test schools were encouraged to participate  in the survey. Participating teachers received their survey results in CIITS on April 1. Results from the 2013 survey will not be used for teacher evaluation. KDE will collect the data to validate the instrument for future use. Here is the  Student Voice Survey for 3rd -5th grades and the Student Voice Survey  for  6th -12th grades.
The effective use of student voice surveys is featured in the Gates Foundation MET Project.    Using a sample of over 44,500 students, the results of the MET study in December 2010 and January 2012 reinforce a growing consensus that integrating student survey assessment results with high-quality observations and student growth scores on achievement tests creates a much more valid and reliable teacher evaluation system compared to current standard practices. More information can be found in the recently released MET Project Policy and Practitioner Brief and in Asking Students about Teaching.
