The Healthier KY Challenge (HKYC) is a volunteer program open to our CACFP for-profit and non-profit, at-risk, homeless shelters, adult day care centers, and family day care homes.
The program incorporates the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the Institute of Medicine's Nutritional Standards for School Meals, as well as the Kentucky Department of Education's Additional Food Component Recommendations. Currently, 30% of Kentucky adults are obese and Kentucky ranks 3rd in the nation for childhood obesity.
The HKYC requires participants to develop and use a cycle menu to help consistently integrate fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dried beans and dried peas, good sources of iron and vitamins A and C while decreasing the amount of foods containing high percentages of fats and sodium. The HKYC also requires a planned time for daily physical activity, which may result in small changes in daily schedules and environments.
