There are hundreds of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students currently enrolled in K – 12 school settings all over Kentucky.
A teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) and/or an interpreter should be placed in a school where DHH students are present. However, despite the many schools that provide for these students, there are others which do not have the capacity or are in a rural area which makes it difficult to find a qualified teacher or interpreter for the DHH among another reasons.
In order to assist and support those schools and educators in providing for their Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students, the Kentucky Department of Education (thanks to the work between the Division of Learning Services and the Division of School Technology Services) has created a resource called “The ASL Survival Toolkit”.
This resource is a collection of videos that have been created primarily for school districts so administration, staff, and teachers are given the opportunity to learn survival American Sign Language (ASL) skills so they can start communicating with DHH students at their school.
The videos (available through the
Kentucky Department of Education’s Media Portal) are not limited to school districts – any one is welcome to watch and learn.
