Assistant Director of Mathematics – MOA Field Staff, Western Region

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) seeks a high-performing educational leader to support leadership for the Kentucky Numeracy Counts Act implementation statewide.​

The Assistant Director of Mathematics will work within the KDE's Office of Teaching and Learning and will be field staff located in the Western part of the state with some required travel throughout Kentucky.

Job Responsibilities:

Strategy Leadership
  • Alongside the Director of Mathematics, lead the Department's strategic vision and plan for supporting instructional improvement in numeracy aligned to House Bill 162 (2024).
  • Represent and support numeracy priorities and vision in working with agency offices, Kentucky educators, Numeracy Counts partners, and other stakeholders.
Team Leadership
  • Confidently and humbly work with superintendents, LEA staff, and school leaders to marshal the will, talent and information required for improvement in student numeracy outcomes in all schools, particularly those that are underperforming
  • Coordinate efforts to ensure adequate, efficient support for identified schools and LEAs
  • Assist LEAs in building capacity to critically assess the needs of underperforming schools and selectively implement evidence-based practices to meet those needs
  • Delegate and manage numeracy projects
  • Support the numeracy team to meet the highest standard of quality as they provide instructional support resources to the field
  • Manage large-scale, high-impact numeracy instructional support projects, including the Numeracy Counts Academies
Desired Knowledge and Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of the Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics, evidence-based numeracy concepts, and effective mathematics teaching practices
  • Project management skills, including long-range planning, progress monitoring and ability to juggle multiple complex and long-term projects
  • People management and team leadership skills, including strategic planning and team leadership to promote both a sense of belonging and value among team members and to achieve meaningful goals
  • Knowledge of instructional systems in Kentucky schools and districts, including concepts of effective curriculum-based professional development, high-quality instructional resources for mathematics, and the systems and structures that are needed to improve student outcomes in mathematics.

Desired Experience:
  • Experience teaching in the preK-12 classroom
  • Experience leading other educators, in a position either with or without formal authority
  • Experience in the Numeracy Counts Academies

Applicants currently under contract with a local school district are required to provide a written release from their superintendent prior to an offer of employment will be given.
 
NOTE: This position will be filled through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). The applicant selected for this position must be an employee of a Kentucky local school district or institution of higher education.

NOTE: This will be a field staff position; an MOA for 220-240 days.
