The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), Office of Special Education and Early Learning, Division of State Schools, Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB) in Louisville (Jefferson County) has an opening for an Assistive Technology Teacher.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instruction and Student Support
- Provide direct and consultative services in assistive technology to students who are blind or visually impaired.
- Assess students' assistive technology needs and recommend appropriate devices and software.
- Teach students to effectively use assistive technology to access the general curriculum, complete assignments, and develop independent learning skills.
- Provide instruction in accessible formats (braille, large print, digital, tactile) as needed.
- Support students in transitioning between educational settings with the appropriate technology tools.
Collaboration and Consultation
- Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, related service providers, and instructional staff to integrate assistive technology into daily instruction.
- Train teachers, paraprofessionals, and families on the use of accessibility features and specialized devices.
- Participate in IEP meetings, assist in developing goals related to technology use, and document progress.
- Coordinate with technology departments to ensure accessibility compliance and equipment maintenance.
Program and Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain current knowledge of emerging assistive technology for students with visual impairments.
- Manage inventory, ordering, and distribution of technology and materials.
- Comply with all federal, state, and district regulations regarding special education and assistive technology.
- Participate in professional development to enhance skills in technology and vision education.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Knowledge of braille, Nemeth Code, tactile graphics, and accessibility tools. Experience with adaptive and mainstream technology such as:
- Screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, Voiceover)
- Screen magnification software (ZoomText, Fusion)
- Refreshable braille displays
- iOS and Android accessibility features
- Braille note-takers and embossers
- Tactile and auditory instructional materials
- Effective communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
KY Teaching Certificate with the Education and Professionals Standards Board is required. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Education or Special Education preferred. Certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) required. Endorsement or experience in Assistive Technology for students with visual impairments (CATIS) preferred.
In accordance with KRS 161.220 the applicant selected for this position will become a member of the Kentucky Teacher's Retirement System.
Salary: Dependent upon certification and experience.
2025-2026 KSB-KSD Salary Schedule
