The Division of Innovative Learning has been working to support the vision of United We Learn. The following projects and initiatives are the division's current efforts to create more vibrant learning experiences for students, encourage innovation in our schools, and create a bold new future through collaboration with communities.

Local Laboratories of Learning (L3s): Innovating in Assessment and Accountability in Kentucky

The Local Laboratories of Learning (L3s) initiative is a collaborative effort led by the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), in partnership with the Kentucky Board of Education, Ohio Valley Education Cooperative (OVEC), and the University of Kentucky Center for Next Generation Leadership (UK NextGen). Designed to reimagine student assessment and accountability, L3s bring together districts, educators, students, families, and community partners to co-create meaningful, locally-driven approaches to evaluating student learning. Grounded in the principles of empathy, co-creation, reciprocity, and inclusion, L3s empower districts to prototype innovative assessment models that reflect their unique community values, enhance student learning, and support vibrant, student-centered experiences.

Through community engagement, shared learning, and statewide collaboration, L3s contribute to Kentucky’s evolving assessment and accountability framework, a key pillar of the Kentucky United We Learn (KUWL) vision. With 18 participating districts across three cohorts, the initiative fosters district-led innovation, provides monthly Communities of Practice, and offers 1:1 coaching to support implementation and continuous improvement. By designing new models of accountability that move beyond standardized measures, L3 districts are shaping a future where assessment is authentic, responsive, and deeply connected to student success.

Project-Based Learning

Project-based learning (PBL) strongly integrates with the goals of creating vibrant learning experiences and the vision of Kentucky’s "United We Learn" initiative. PBL provides significant academic engagement which inspires a love of learning and personal connection to the academic experience. By emphasizing student-driven inquiry, real-world problem-solving, and collaboration, PBL ensures that learning is both authentic and impactful. These experiences cultivate critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills that are essential for preparing students for the demands of the modern world. Similarly, the "United We Learn" initiative focuses on reimagining education in Kentucky by emphasizing student input, building community partnerships, and promoting equity. PBL is a research-based approach for enhancing the student experience and working toward a shared vision where learners take ownership of their education and actively contribute to their communities, helping ensure all students thrive in a dynamic, future-ready learning environment.

Math Badging & Student Micro-Credentials

In partnership with XQ Institute, the Kentucky Center for Mathematics (KCM), Whiteboard Advisors, and the Kentucky Department of Education, seven districts (Allen, Berea Independent, Bullitt, Carter, Corbin Independent, Jefferson, and Johnson) are working with multi-state partners to align and implement student micro-credentials into their current Algebra I programs. The goal of this two-year pilot is to improve math outcomes and advance equity through: stronger alignment to math needed for secondary, post secondary, and career success; students demonstrating knowledge not captured by traditional grades; opportunities to develop and reinforce math knowledge and skills; validate learning outside of the classroom through work-based and other applied learning; and customization that engages students with math directly relation to college and career interests.

Innovative Teacher Fellowship

Teachers in this fellowship craft innovative experiences that connect to the Three Big Ideas of the United We Learn vision:

  1. Vibrant learning experiences for every student

  2. Innovation, especially in assessment

  3. Community collaboration and connection

The fellowship also engages Fellows in documentation and reflection based on the United We Learn vision and co-created competencies that support vibrant learning experiences (student voice and choice, presentations of process and product, rigorous connections to standards, etc.).
