School-based Mental Health

What is school-based mental health?​

​School -based mental health services refers to the provision of counseling and support services to students during the school day, at the school. These services are provided by school-based mental health professionals as defined by the School Safety and Resiliency Act and include school social workers and school counselors.​

​Why is school-based mental health critical for schools?

​Mental health refers to the state of our thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Mental health is a critical part of education, and providing school-based mental health support will improve learning and promote academic success.

How to Address Mental Health in Schools?

The Mental Health Technology Transfer Center, the National Council for Mental Well-Being, and the  Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports provide resources for school-based mental health services:

Request for Assistance and/or Training

Schools and districts seeking assistance from the Division of Student Success, Safe and Supportive Schools Branch can complete the Request for Assistance and/or​ Training​ form. A program consultant will respond in a timely fashion when the request has been submitted.​​
