Paraeducators working in a program supported with Title I, Part A funds must have a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent. Additional qualifying educational requirement for Title I, Part A funded paraeducators may be met by any one of the following:
- Complete two years of study at an institution of higher education; or
- Hold an associate’s (or higher) degree; or
- Pass the Kentucky Paraeducator Assessment exam
The Kentucky Paraeducator Assessment (KPA) is a rigorous standard assessment that allows the applicant to demonstrate their knowledge and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
It is the responsibility of the local school district to administer the KPA. For information regarding times and testing locations, contact your local school district.

will provide the applicant with information on the role of the paraeducator and the strategies for assisting with student instruction. Review of this guide will help prepare test takers for the KPA.
