School Guidance Counselor

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), Office of Special Education and Early Learning, Division of State Schools, has an opening for a School Guidance Counselor at the Kentucky School for the Deaf in Danville.​

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Plans, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive developmental and preventative guidance program aligned with the school's Consolidated Plan.

Identifies barriers to student success (e.g., attendance, adjustment, academic performance) through established referral processes and develops appropriate intervention plans.

Provides individual, group, and classroom-based counseling and social-emotional learning instruction to address students' social-emotional, behavioral, mental health, academic, career, and personal/social development needs.

Supports academic and behavioral progress monitoring and provides staff support for the implementation of the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework.

Serves as an active member of the Mental Health Team and participates in ARC meetings, as needed, to support educational planning and service delivery.

Collaborate with school, district, and community resources to coordinate student services, referrals, and outside agency supports.

Coordinates Career and Technical Education (CTE), Community Work Transition, and College and Career Readiness initiatives, including college entrance testing, scholarships, and financial aid information.

Collaborates with staff and administration on the master schedule, student placement, course assignments, and ensures coursework aligns with graduation requirements; enters and maintains student schedules in Infinite Campus.

Develops and implements orientation and transition programs across educational levels, including preschool through postsecondary.

Oversee the maintenance and interpretation of permanent student records, including report cards, transcripts, and course of study requirements.

Coordinates and schedules student staffing meetings and parent, staff, and student conferences as needed.

Collaborates with staff to ensure school-level compliance with federal, state, and local mandates and serves as the Building Assessment Coordinator (BAC) for state testing programs.

Works collaboratively with Kentucky School for the Deaf professionals to plan programs, implement changes, and evaluate progress as part of the overall educational program.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal and School Administrators

Minimum Requirements:
  • Master's Degree: School Counseling
  • Certificate for School Counselor, All Grades issued by the Kentucky Educational Professional Standards Board
  • Three (3) years of experience as Guidance Counselor
Knowledge of:

Proficiency in ASL is preferred. Please note the selected candidate is expected to attain a Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) rating of Intermediate is within four years of employment.
